THE PROTRAIT OF ARMAND ROULIN
By VINCENT VAN GOGH
"THE PROTRAIT OF ARMAND ROULIN" (25.5"/21.2" inches) oil on canvas, Painted by VINCENT VAN GOGH in 1888 (Arles). Now it is in Folkwang Museum, Essen.
THE Second portrait of Armand Roulin is more beautifully drawn, with soft, Auid lines, in harmony with the lighter tones & the more open mood of the subject. The drawing is perfectly precise, but relaxed & without accents.
The lines of the yellow jacket rise in varied patterns simple, mounting, blue lines on the arms & shoulders, more playful, wavy & zigzag lines within converging upon the finely drawn head, with its multitude of shadowless, nuanced tones in a narrow range of light & dark.
The hat of a subtle blue used also in the drawing of the outlines, in the hair & eyebrows, in the vest & button is a fascinating shape, symmetrical as a whole, irregular & free in detail, like the conception of the entire work.
The linking of the face to the soft light green background is of a masterly refinement; this pale, indescribable flesh colour contains delicate pinks, complementary to the background & a range of cool & light greens that belong with the background colour.
Tiny yellow highlights of the eyes & a dash of yellow on the chin refer to the yellow jacket. The execu tion is soft & tender, with little pressure, & of an unusual thinness of the pigment, in places like a water colour.
It is in spirit an outdoor summer portrait in which van Gogh's frank, loving vision, his delight in the presence of a young individual, determine an indwelling luminosity more human & revealing than the poetic sunniness of Impressionist painting.
