THE LOOM By VINCENT VAN GOGH

 THE LOOM

                        by VINCENT VAN GOGH.

"THE LOOM" (27.5"/33.5" inches) oil on canvas, Painted by Vincent Van Gagh in May 1884. Now it is in Kroller-Muller State Museum, Otterlo.

This ia a series of weaving artists. Van gogh gave to the image of the worker a high power & solemnity. In the sincere skillful labour of the weaver. No doubt, A relation with his won artistic work, With extreme dignity & the peasant sits at the loom, Which fills the area with his constructed vertical & horizontal dark forms. It is a result of Van Gogh's love of painting in light &dark shadow in a powerful brown tonality which reduces the strength of local colors. But in turn gives to the whole a more mysterious effect. As if the intangible of a spirit dominated over the element of material things.

Although the forms are in places cut out too clearly against the background. The bonding of light and dark are finely studied and tuneful. Perfectly observe in the soft cool tones of the cloth in light & shadow beside the warm background tone, itself soft cool beside the brownness of the loom & the finest intermission between them. The crocked lamp at the right is wonderful in its greys & in bright & contrast with the lighter wall & the ochre tassel like silk wash beside it.

Of a painting of the as same subject, Vincent Van Gagh wrote whimsically-

"this colossal black thing, which has become so dingy/looking--an old/oak color-- with all its ribs stands out in sharp contrast to its grey surroundings, and in the midst of it sits a black ape or gnome or ghost who makes those ribs clatter all day long."
